Thursday, September 24th: System-level Investing in Action, 12pm-2pm ET

During NYC Climate Week, The Investment Integration Project (TIIP) and The Shareholder Commons (TSC) will bring together practitioners for an interactive roundtable focused on a key question: What are the most meaningful actions to take as system-level investors and how can they be advanced within their organizations?

Drawing on the complementary work of two leading voices in system-level investing, participants will discuss and explore practical actions available to system-level investors, emerging best practices and implementation challenges, and consider how these approaches can be adapted to different organizational contexts through actionable resources and tools.

The discussion will include insights and contributions to The Shareholder Commons’ System-level Investing Knowledge Lab, while also anchoring the conversation in The Handbook of System-level Investing. It will also include an interactive demonstration of TIIP’s Systems Aware Investing Launchpad (SAIL) platform designed to help participants consider how the insights from the discussion can be translated into organizational strategy and practice.

The session will be highly participatory, with opportunities to co-create solutions, share experiences, ask questions, and learn from peers.

Lunch will be provided.

N.B., Space is limited. If we are unable to accommodate all interested participants, TIIP and TSC will follow up with additional opportunities to engage in the future.

Submit your application to attend via Eventbrite here.

Friday, September 25th: From Data Points to Bigger Picture: AI for Systems-Aware Investing, 9:00-11:00 am ET

Join US SIF during NYC Climate Week 2026 for an exclusive brunch-and-learn featuring leaders from The Investment Integration Project (TIIP), one of the world’s leading organizations advancing system-level investing.

Today’s investors face risks that extend far beyond the financial performance of individual companies. Climate instability, biodiversity loss, economic exclusion, geopolitical uncertainty, public health challenges, and other interconnected forces increasingly shape long-term market outcomes. Understanding these system-level risks is becoming essential for investors seeking resilient portfolios and durable long-term returns.

During this interactive discussion, TIIP will introduce SAIL (Systems Aware Investing Launchpad), its AI-enhanced platform designed to help investors understand, analyze, and implement systems-aware investment strategies. Attendees will learn how artificial intelligence can help investors identify systemic risks, evaluate opportunities, and integrate systems thinking into investment policies, stewardship, asset allocation, and portfolio management.

Whether you’re a financial advisor, institutional investor, asset manager, consultant, or sustainability professional, this session will provide practical insights into one of the most rapidly evolving areas of sustainable investing.

You’ll also hear from US SIF about resources developed specifically for financial advisors, including upcoming educational initiatives.

System-level Investing Redux: 2 Videos

5th Annual Symposium on System-level Investing

As promised, over the next few months, we will continue to release the remaining videos from TIIP’s 5th Annual Symposium on System-level Investing, From Ambition to Action, held on April 14, 2026, to support shared learning and help all of us continue getting smarter together.

Each post will include the session description, presentation slides (where available), and video recording. If anything you see or hear sparks questions, ideas, or reflections, we’d love to hear from you. We’re always eager to learn what’s resonating—and to help unpack some of the complex concepts explored throughout the day.

Case Study: Different Organizations, Different Leverage Points

John Hoeppner, Head of Strategic Relationships & Active Ownership @ Builders Vision

If markets function as complex systems, effective intervention depends on choosing leverage points that align with institutional capabilities. John Hoeppner contrasts his experience leading stewardship at a global asset manager with his current work at Builders Vision, where flexible capital is deployed to catalyze innovation and shift value chains. The session illustrates why system-level investing cannot be reduced to a standardized playbook—and why effectiveness depends on matching tools, capital, and culture to each organization’s role.

Case Study: Lessons Learned from a Decade of Implementation

Carole Laible, CEO @ Domini Impact Investments

With frameworks in place, attention turns to the realities of long-term implementation. Carole Laible of Domini Impact Investments recounts what began as a seemingly straightforward task—setting goals for forest asset management—and evolved into a complex systems challenge. As subsystems collided and objectives conflicted, the path forward proved nonlinear and at times confounding. This session offers a candid account of detours, trade-offs, and lessons learned, highlighting the practical complexity investors face when managing real assets within interconnected systems.

The Post-Growth Perspective: A Client-Aware Framework for Resilient Portfolio Construction

by Noel Paccarro Brown, CIMA, CPWA

In current edition of Investments & Wealth review, TIIP Advisory Council Member, Noel Paccarro Brown, CIMA, CPWA, argues that modern portfolio theory’s growth assumptions no longer hold up against mounting evidence of ecological overshoot and polycrisis dynamics. She proposes a five-layer “post-growth portfolio” architecture (liquidity, real capital preservation, cash-flow engines, adaptive risk capital, and anti-fragility) built around resilience and necessity rather than return optimization, alongside a shift to event-driven rebalancing and longer-horizon governance.

This piece is a welcome contribution because it brings system-level thinking, finance embedded within economy embedded within ecosystem, directly into mainstream wealth management practice, translating the logic TIIP champions into concrete portfolio construction tools that advisors can act on with clients today.

The Total Portfolio Approach (TPA): A Practical Guide for Navigating the Transition to TPA

by Roger Urwin and Genevieve Hayman

This CFA Institute Research and Policy Center report, authored by Roger Urwin and Genevieve Hayman, who spoke at TIIP‘s 5th Annual Symposium on System-level Investing this past April, makes the case that strategic asset allocation’s rigid asset-class silos and static capital market assumptions are increasingly mismatched to a world shaped by AI disruption, expanding private markets, and shifting geopolitics. Drawing on interviews with 14 senior executives at organizations like Australia’s Future Fund and NZ Super, the report presents the total portfolio approach (TPA) as an integrated, goal-driven alternative that evaluates every investment by its contribution to total-fund objectives, framing adoption as a spectrum rather than an all-or-nothing shift, with governance and culture, not investment methodology, as the primary barriers to adoption.

From a TIIP perspective, we are thrilled to see this validation come from within mainstream institutional practice: the core premise that fragmented, silo-based decision-making is no longer adequate to navigate systemic risk echoes long-standing system-level thinking that TIIP has advocated for since our founding in 2015.

What’s New With SAIL?

SAIL has a new look! And that’s not all..

  • We have streamlined the onboarding and included Diagnostics in Launchpad page!
    • Upload supporting documents and generate diagnostics related to various dimensions of practice on demand.
    • Keep all results in the local document library for revisiting, refining, and reusing over time.
  • We upgraded Benchmark’s filtering capabilities!  If you haven’t looked at it lately, the Benchmark database makes it easier than ever to find what you need.
    • Compare managers and peers side by side across 20+ system-level themes (we currently have +700 investor profiles in the database).
    • Integrate existing financial, sustainability, and impact data to track progress over time.
    • Leverage TIIP’s proprietary methodology to assess a range of investors across conventional, sustainable, impact, or system-level investing approaches.

New features coming soon…

  • Rolling out by the end of the summer: Rework! Rework will allow Subscribers to fill out questionnaires quickly using content from your Launchpad or other context you upload as PDF files or web links. You can also use it to rewrite policies or other documents, adding new risks you’re considering or current events unfolding in real-time as context. The reworked document will be stored in your DocLibrary on that page.
    • Auto-populate due diligence questionnaires or prototype policy responses to emerging systemic risks.
    • Upload or paste a questionnaire or target document, then rework it, guiding by the additional context you feed it.
    • You can further guide the output to include new considerations such as new risks, geographies or current events you want to explore.
    • Keep every result in the local document library to revisit, refine, and reuse over time.

  • Early next year: Dashboard! Dashboard is a systems-intelligence tool that assesses your whole portfolio — across every asset class and manager — for its real-world influence. (Note that Dashboard will not be part of the Basic Subscription, which includes Launchpad, Benchmark, Reporting, and Rework (when available). Dashboard will be a separate add-on included in the Total Portfolio Subscription.)
    • Classify holdings as system stabilizers or destabilizers across 12 dimensions.
    • Navigate from company to sector to real-economy views, surfacing actionable insights.
    • Create governance and investment committee-ready reports and turn portfolio and systems intelligence into effective allocation and stewardship decisions.

Also, Diagnostics and Playbooks are available!

On your behalf, the TIIP team can now run diagnostics on any element of your practice you’d like to assess across the 6 steps outlined in Launchpad. If you’d like a playbook for taking a specific practice, such as stewardship or portfolio construction, to the system level, we can develop one. Or, if you’re thinking through what to do about a specific systemic risk or how to deploy capital in a specific geographic area, we can help with that, too.

  • Do you need direct guidance on incorporating total portfolio thinking? Here is our suite of services:
    • Total Portfolio Activation: Assess your readiness for system-level investing and create a go-forward plan
    • Total Portfolio Implementation: TIIP provides practical tools and support for integrating system-level strategies into your policies, programs and practices
    • Total Portfolio Review: Helps investors assess and refine their investment strategies with a systems lens. Many of these assessments have been released publicly in whole or in part as case studies on an investor’s journey
  • Do you need a playbook on how to extend a tool to the system-level, address a systemic risk or constellation of risks, or deploy capital in a specific geography?
    • The Organization-wide System-level Investing Playbook is for the investor ready to align their entire portfolio with long-term systemic outcomes
    • The Systemic Stewardship Playbook is for those ready to take their stewardship efforts to the system-level
    • The Asset Class Specific Playbook is for investors seeking a sharper strategy that reflects the unique utility of particular asset classes to contend with a specific systemic risk, or intersection of risks
    • Issue Specific Playbooks for a Targeted Geography are for those navigating a pressing issue area — or a tangle of converging risks. We diagnose the systemic dynamics at play in your priority geographic area (whether local, national, regional or global) and deliver actionable guidance tailored to you
    • Capital Needs Assessment is for investors or coalitions with a stake in a specific place. We assess the capital gaps in the priority geography — city, state , region, country or area — and build a playbook for deploying capital where and how it’s needed most
